David Beckett
is one of Canada's leading child portrait photographers. He is based
in Toronto and commutes to Vancouver each spring.
Born in February,
1958, David spent most of his formative years in Ancaster, Ontario.
He is a third generation portrait photographer, following in the
footsteps of his father, Thomas and his grandfather, Hubert Beckett,
who began his career photographing children in the 1920's.
Working exclusively
in black and white, David Beckett is renowned for his ability to
capture the spirit of his subjects, producing candid portraits in
a studio setting. His playful approach brings out the same spontaneity
in his portraits of adults.
In 1986, David
was awarded a grant by the Ontario Arts Council to photograph children
of diverse ethnic backgrounds. Soon after this well-received study,
Beckett's unique vision began to gain critical acclaim.
